After the rapid fire updates during Ed's adventures in Kuwait, it feels like ages since we've updated the blog. In part, like the decreased news coverage of Iraq, that's what happens when things get calmer. But that's not to say that the story has ended. When we last posted, Ed had arrived back in the states, and was waiting around Fort Lewis, Washington, hoping to start outprocessing. Our story picks up essentially where we left him, except that he actually started his paperwork and consultations on Wednesday. However, we still have no idea when he is actually coming home.
Despite a relatively danger-free year as a FOBBIT in Iraq, it appears that some old injuries (high-school football and prior service related) were aggravated by the conditions he faced over there (i.e. wearing many pounds of body armor). Therefore, he will be doing some extra medical visits and possibly physical therapy before he comes home. We'll know more tomorrow. Or, maybe a week from tomorrow.
It's funny. A friend of ours from college is getting married on June 20th. We finally told him a few days ago that we wouldn't be able to make the wedding. We figured that if we RSVPed affirmatively and bought plane tickets et al., that of course Ed wouldn't be out in time to attend. Whereas, if we declined, certainly he would be home before the 20th. As happened with the connex (see post 5/22), our strategy failed to fool the fates. We may have to re-evaluate our philosophy on life.
On the plus side, we did get to see each other last weekend. He got a four day pass (which, of course, was almost canceled at the last minute) and we met at a lovely B&B in Ashland where we had beautiful weather, saw moving theater, and enjoyed delicious food.
One of these days we'll actually be able to post that he is home. Until then, at least we're in the same time zone.
