Despite being stationed near Tikrit (Saddam Hussein’s home town), Eddy seems to be out and about quite a bit and seeing lots of Iraq. Last week it was Baghdad, well, technically the Green Zone “like a resort (with the odd rocket attack).” This week it’s Mosul where he is meeting with folks from the State Dept, PRT (I have no idea who this is. (KS) PRT = Provincial Reconstruction Team. You know, the guys who are basically creating Iraq. (EV)) and the ACoE (Army Corps of Engineers to those who don’t speak fluently TLA – three letter acronyms). Too bad the country is at war, the museums were looted and the bridges have been blown up. Otherwise Ed would be making quite the trip through antiquity.
Perhaps the old silk road is next? (Actually, let's hope not).
(Note 9/5 - What do you know, it seems that there is actually sightseeing in Mosul.
"Apparently the oldest Christian monestary in the middle east is on the base near Mosul. As the 101st was rolling through here 4 years ago the Iraqis occupied it so the 101st blew up a little of it (not too bad) but then, per the tradition of conquering armies throughout history, the knuckleheads painted painted a 6ft tall Screaming Eagle patch(the shoulder patch the guys in Band of Brothers werewearing) on it. This monestary doesn't look like it's ever been excavated. There are burial urns in the wall with bones poking out, original crusader crosses carved in the walls, almost whole pottery around on the ground, and God only knows what else buried. It's fenced off now and you have to get a tour from the Chaplain to get in. Anyway, apparently it's for St Elijiah and it was built in 595. "
